Closed Beta — Terms & Conditions

Last updated: May 25, 2026

1. What "Closed Beta" Means

HewnTree is in closed beta. Access is limited to a small cohort of early users (target: 25 accounts). The product is functional, but rough edges exist. By signing up during the beta, you're agreeing to these terms in addition to our standard Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.

2. Bugs + Service Interruptions Expected

The product is actively evolving. You may encounter:

  • Bugs, incomplete features, or behavior that changes between sessions.
  • Service interruptions or degradation. HewnTree depends on third-party services (AI providers, hosting, payment processing, email). Any of these may be slow or unavailable from time to time. During beta we won't always be able to react instantly.
  • Planned maintenance with little or no notice. We try to schedule disruptive work for off-hours but can't always.
  • Data migrations that may briefly take features offline.

We don't commit to an uptime target during beta. If something is broken for you, email us. Bug reports during beta directly shape what gets fixed first.

3. Data — No Guarantees

We do everything reasonable to keep your data safe (Supabase backups, encryption in transit + at rest, RLS-protected tables). However:

  • You may lose data. A migration bug, an accidental delete, an outage — any of these could cost you work. Don't put your only copy of mission-critical content in HewnTree during beta.
  • You can export anytime. Use the Export to PDF button on Pro or request a full GDPR data export from your account page.
  • We'll do our best to make you whole if something goes wrong. But we can't legally guarantee zero data loss during beta.
  • Backups are best-effort. Supabase runs daily backups on the underlying database, but we don't separately archive your idea content beyond that. If you have content you can't afford to lose, export to PDF (Pro) or request a GDPR JSON export from your account page. Keep your own copy.

4. Pricing & Billing

Real money, real charges. If you upgrade to Pro ($29/mo) or buy an Idea Pass ($5 one-time), you're charged via Stripe like any other customer. Beta is not free-by-default beyond the standard Free tier.

Pricing may change at exit. We may adjust pricing when we exit closed beta. Existing subscriptions are honored at the price you signed up at, until you cancel or upgrade. Idea Passes you've already purchased remain valid.

Refunds during beta: if a critical bug blocks you from using a feature you paid for, email us. We'll work it out.

5. Confidentiality (Asking Nicely)

Beta access gives you a preview of features that aren't public yet. We ask that you don't:

  • Publicly share screenshots of unreleased features (in-progress UI, internal-only labels) without checking with us first.
  • Discuss specifics of the beta — bugs, roadmap, internal pricing experiments — in public forums.
  • Demo the closed-beta build to people who don't have beta access. You can talk about HewnTree; just don't share a logged-in session.

Use your judgment. We're not running a strict NDA — this is asking-nicely. We'll loosen these requirements as we exit closed beta.

6. Feedback (Optional)

Feedback is encouraged but not required. The fastest channel is email to mike@hewntree.com. There's also a banner at the top of your ideas page with a feedback link while beta is active.

By submitting feedback during beta, you give us a non-exclusive, royalty-free license to use it to improve the product. You don't have to assign IP — just acknowledge that a suggestion itself isn't something we owe you for if it later becomes a feature.

7. What Happens When Beta Ends

When we exit closed beta, here's what happens to your account specifically:

  • Your account stays. You don't have to re-register. Your ideas, tree content, batch history, and subscription state all transfer to the post-beta product.
  • The beta banner disappears from your ideas page.
  • This terms page returns a 404. The post-beta version of HewnTree is governed by the standard Terms of Service.
  • Active subscriptions continue at their original price until you cancel or change plans.

8. Account Termination

You can request account deletion anytime from your account page. We may, in rare circumstances (abuse, fraud), terminate beta access without notice. We'll email you if we do.

9. No Warranty, No Liability Beyond Refunds

HewnTree during closed beta is provided "as is" and "as available". We're a small team building in public. We don't guarantee uptime, feature completeness, defect-free behavior, or that the product fits your specific use case. To the maximum extent permitted by law, our total liability for any claim arising from your participation in the closed beta is limited to refunding the most recent payment you made to us. This is in addition to (and consistent with) the limitations in the main Terms of Service §11.
